Audacity volume controls don't work in Lenny - did in Etch

I have installed Lenny, with both Gnome and KDE (actually using KDE), on the same machine as a KDE only Etch. Audacity, which worked well on Etch, has problems, principally that the volume controls - record and playback - have no effect. I can control the playback volume with Kmix, but nothing seems to affect the record volume. There is no bug for this, so I assume I am missing something. Any ideas? Moving the microphone about kind of works, but I would prefer a proper solution.

Try alsamixer, and make the adjustment global.

Alsamixer seems to do the same as Kmix etc, and does not fix the problem, even though it seemed to think the mic was muted so I un-muted it. But what do you mean by "make the adjustment global"?

It would appear that Audacity, while part of the Debian distro, is not actually supported by Debian, so short of installing an out-of-distro version I will just have to put up with it. I have reinstalled Debian as KDE only, but nothing has changed.
