If that's all you want, try running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and use the VESA drivers. They'll probably handle that. You might need to go in and physically edit the /etc/X11/XF86config4 file. (That file name may not be quite right, but it's close.) On the lines where you see a screen depth like 800x600, add 1024x768 in front of the 800x600. If you really want to get your fglrx drivers working, you'll probably have to move up to Testing and Xorg.
