artsd keeps crashing

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Arg no sound running KDE3.5.2 on Kanotix Easter RC4. Following doing updates today when I rebooted my laptop artsd keeps crashing. Arts and linux-sound-base were both updated today.

Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?

Unfortunately I don't seem to be getting any backtrace info .

How do I set it up so I can see why it is crashing?

Is there a way to have sound without artsd running? I don't use any KDE sounds.

Had a simalar problem with artsd and the sound in Gnome. From what I can gather from the mailing list and the bug reports, there is a bug in libasound2-1.0.11-5 that is causing all sorts of problems with the sound in Debian. If you are using libasound2-1.0.11-5 downgrading to 1.0.11-4 will solve the problem until a fix is uploaded.

If you do not have a previous version to fall back on in aptitude or in your package cache, download the package from here http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/a/alsa-lib/ , remove the newer 1.0.11-5 and install the 1.0.11-4 version.

I just noticed that libasound2-1.0.11-6 is in the repos now, so upgrading to that may solve the issue--if not then downgrade to 1.0.11-4 until the problem is solved. This may also solve the problem for people with sound problems in Gnome.

*Update*

Appears that the new 1.0.11-6 causes problems as well and fixes nothing so I'm going to downgrade. Hopefully that will return things to normal.

Had to downgrade libasound2-1.0.11-4 and the libasound2-dev-1.0.11-4 packages. But sound works and no more crashes.

Good to hear. Good news: libasound2-1.0.11-7 is in the main repo and it appears to have corrected the problems that I had earlier regarding alsa so an upgrade may be safe to undertake now. I am not sure if it solves the artsd problem yet.

Ok I just tested and KDE applications work fine without artsd crashing at all like the previous couple of days. So libasound2-1.0.11-7 solves all problems that I know of regarding the sound recently.
