aptitude- list/grab package for another debian release

Hi All,

I'm looking for a way to use aptitude to look for a package on another release. For example, if I'm using Lenny and want to see if package foo is available in Sid. Also, from Lenny, is there a way to use aptitude to grab that package instead of having to open the Sid repository in my sources.list? Something like: aptitude install foo -dist sid

Thanks,

ab

I've read the aptitude man-pages several times before, but I can't recall seeing any option like that. So, I'm afraid you'd have to either add Sid to your sources.list or install manually.

You have a couple choices. You could find the Sid version here, download it, and install it with dpkg -i.

A better solution which does involve adding Sid to your sources.list, is to correctly set up a mixed Lenny/Sid system with the preferred release = Lenny. That way, you can get the occasional package from Sid, but you'll have to ask for it specifically. Normally any package you install or upgrade will come from Lenny.
