Unhappy apt setup package source dvd sarge

after many hours of forum and deb doc research i am completely stumped.

successfully installed deb base install from (bootable) DVD-ROM. now wish to install other packages such as KDE.

the complete sarge distribution (all packages) are on 2 DVD's.

when i launch apt-setup it will not recognise DVD source. also cannot mount /dev/scd01 from command shell which is maybe why apt is not seeing it.

wondered if it's possible to copy all packages from DVD's to HDD and then get apt to grab from there. NO! tried copying DVD contents to ext3 partition but fails due to read error. this could be due to usual CRC probs with DVD format.

is possible that kernel available in base install does not have ide-scsi module available? when i modprobe ide-scsi, i am getting failed dependencies issue.
using 2.4.27 kernel. dont really fancy recompling kernel again just for DVD support if APT is still not gonna work.

can browse and read all contents of DVD's with knoppix and slack.

surprising how little info out there about deb DVD install.

Dunno, maybe try with 2.6 kernel. Boot with 'linux26' to install that one. Cant think of anything else. The other two dvd's are the same as the install one? gotten from same place? Strange if you can boot from one, yet you cant use it once installed. Is you dvd player atapi or scsi, assuming its scsi. Look and see what its called. Apt may be looking for /dev/cdrom.

ide-scsi

thanks for the reply.. there are only 2 dvdroms ...base was installed from dvdrom1 which is bootable..

dvd drive is ide adapi but trying to use ide-scsi emulation - have tried to mount /dev/scd1 manually with no luck. but yes, i dont need ide-scsi for DVD-rom read, right? i cant seem to mount anything though (cdrom or dvdrom) from deb command shell.

mount /dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

i'm gonna launch deb again and re-check all this- i'll let you know how i go.

not sure if reinstall with linux26 is gonna help.

Have a look at your fstab and see what it says about your dvd. Its in /etc directory.

dvdrom 1 shagged

I ran cd integrity check with debian base install prog - getting checksum and CRC errors! Bought from local Melbourne supplier.

DVD-Rom1 is shagged - allows me to install partial deb system but maybe not installing all components correctly.

Thanks for all your help.
