apt-pinning question
 

Hi everybody!

I have a simple question for those mastering debian mixed configuration. As I'm using unstable, I've never really bothered with apt-pinning (compared to people using sarge or etch who sometimes take things from other flavors)

While I'm using KDE, I'm also trying gnome from experimental (2.18 currently) since a few months.

At the moment I have an awfull script that uses apt-show-version to keep up with experimental gnome while all the rest has to stay from unstable. It works.

I would like to know how to do it cleanly, probably using apt-pinning?
But I don't really want to have a preferences file referencing all dependencies of gnome.

I have also not installed gnome metapackage because I don't want evolution.
One solution would be to generate the graph of dependencies and upgrade the top ones which would in turn upgrade all the child but there is probably a cleaner solution.

I will try any method and will keep the easiest / cleanest.

Any ideas?

I occasionally get apps from Experimental, and am currently running Gnome from there, too. I make no special parameters for it at all. Apt won't update from Experimental unless you specifically ask it to. If you have Testing (or Unstable) in your sources list, along with Experimental, and do a dist-upgrade, nothing will come from Experimental. If you want something from Experimental, you you have to do ... aptitude install -t experimental <[i]package-name</i>

Whatever I update from Experimental is strictly manual. I just check Experimental periodically to see if there is a newer version of gnome-core or gnome-utils, and if there is I install it with aptitude.

Hum okay it's how I do it... manually.. (apt-show-versions -u)

In fact, if I manage to tell the system to always upgrade things from experimental (to experimental..) then should be fine.

Good now that the freeze is over with Etch release, 2.16 has entered Lenny which allowed people to work on 2.18 which now is in unstable
I don't really like to play with experimental :)

edit: Just realized that Gnome 2.16 IS in stable, I thought they shipped 2.14 ??
