apt-get messing things up

I thought apt-get would work without any complaints, but..Well, the thing is that apt-get uninstalled all my possibilities to setup Gnome. That is Programs->Settings and all the different things that where here cannot remember what they where though.. :/ All this happened as I tried to install xscreensaver and xscreensaver-gnome. I saw something about apt-get was removing something with my settings and such.

Problem number two. I was fiddling about trying to get the settings back and I accidentaly changed the WM and now I get an error when starting X saying that I should select some WM compatible with Gnome. I had Sawfish, so please tell me how I can get this back.

hmmm, I had similar problems. From a fresh install I installed a window manager & various utilities with apt. I hit a wall when the install of one particular package caused apt to remove all that I had installed??

Hmm, 2 Slackers having trouble with Debian, coincidence?

How did you 2 Slackers ever managed to survive using Slackware???

Slacker #1
Slackware installs Gnome almost by default, don't you know Gnome comes with tons of screensavers? no need to use apt-get to install those. Gnome in Slackware is the same as in Debian.

In the help section is the answer to change window managers, it's just like Gnome in Slack.

Well, Slackware doesn't do things of its own without you telling it. I guess this explains why Slackware has been working for me

macondo:

I was _not_ asking for those things. Of course Gnome is Gnome and so forth. I wanted to get some kind of feedback or explanation why apt-get messed up my installation. Is this a common thing with apt?

Well, Slackware doesn't do things of its own without you telling it.

*******************
Slackware doesn't tell you anything, especially about dependencies, as opposed to Detian.

As for you, you should tell us what version you are using, the exact message received, etc
You should start doing some serious reading.
Apt-get didn't mess up,
YOU messed up.
**************************
I guess this explains why Slackware has been working for me
***********************
Then, the logical thing to do is to stick with what works for you, simple, if you don't want to spend time reading the APT-HOWTO, stick to Slackware, and stop blaming APT for your lack of interest, Stop trolling!
************************:

I was _not_ asking for those things. Of course Gnome is Gnome and so forth. I wanted to get some kind of feedback or explanation why apt-get messed up my installation.
*************************
God knows what you did "accidentally" , the fact that you didn't use Gnome's screensavers and that YOU changed your window manager in Gnome and do not know how to backtrack your steps, shows you are a clueless Slackware user. In the APT-HOWTO are all your answers. And no, this sort of things rarely happens.

Wow! You sure take things personal, don't you?

First of all, I'm sorry if I did express myself vagely. It was not meant as a question to answer on a very detailed level, but some kind of possibility to get information about apt and how reliable it is. I have not been using Linux for that long time (~1,5 years), but I am learning all the time and this is the reason for me not knowing all the basic things. However, I have managed to get Slackware working very well and I feel like I know what I am doing with it. Debian is a totally different story.

Hm. Swaret has worked great for me. I recollect reading something that apt-get doesn't take care of the dependencies in a good way, is it so? Anyway, apt-get messed with installed packages and I cannot really understand your idea of saying that the packages I wanted to install was already installed. How do you know that? Or is it so that Gnome _must_ install xscreensaver? If not, I really cannot see your point..

Regarding your other comments I can just say you shouldn't take things so personal if people comment you behavoir. I just wanted to know a few simple things and you burst out in flames. Furthermore, don't tell people things that are besides the point.

That's because i can read minds, the fact that Gnome comes with xscreensavers already installed by default, is unimportant. Are you related to a guy named 'velan'???

Good to know. I could not find it anyway, so that's why I (re-)installed it. Then, try to explain why apt removed gnome-control-center.

Debian does tell you, however, it doesnt matter if you dont take the time to read what it has to say.. Whenever apt needs to remove a conflicting package, it ASKS you if you want to proceed, so you must have agreed to continue anyways. If you would have read what it was removing you might have changed your mind about installing those packages..

Why dont you try removing the packages that conflict with gnome and try reinstalling it?
