apt-get error message: E: Encountered a section with no Package: header

when i run:
apt-get update

the system downloads all the files then after finishing the downloads displays the following error:

Reading Package Lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

i have recently had another problem with apt-get problem and solution here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=276197

when i google this problem i get links saying about the apt cache. which i have increased and not had any improvemeant.

You haven't by any chance just completed a dist-upgrade ?

If so, (or regardless) you may want to install the latest version of Apt (and dselect etc.) as the older versions are not entirely compatible with the current package lists.

Cheers,

mj

i think the problem was a corrupted file system. i ended up doing a reinstall and everything has been fine since then, i'd been keeping an up to date system for some time but had for some reason eended up getting some corrupted files (which i nolonger get).
