apache2 + php4 package problems
 
I've been trying to get my web server running since last night. I used to have one up running php4, MySQL and apache2 fine. No configuration needed to configure php or MySQL with apache2. Just installed the packages and everything was fine.

I didn't compile from source, I used apt-get. I installed the following packages and their depencies

And, well. It didn't configure itself like it should according to the debian package documentation which stated everything would work out of the box and no configuration would be needed. Therefor they didn't include any setup information. And now, I'm at a loss.

Apache2 seems to be working alright. But when I try to load my index page (index.php) the browser asks my what I want to do with the file. That is open with ... or save to disk.

Is there something I'm missing here? I've tried reinstalling the packages, purging their configuration files (apt-get remove --purge).

If anyone could share some thought about this I'd really appreciate it.

Well, what do you know? It's working. I have no idea how I fixed it. I just reinstalled everything for the fourth time or so... I REALLY don't know what could have been the problem.

Not sure if this matters, but I had a lot of issues also at first with those packages. Finally, I stopped using apt-get, when it came to packages that might have other package downloads, and used Aptitude instead. Using aptitude, I learned that for Apache2, you want to have the 'apache2-mpm-prefork' package, and none of the other mpm ones, because that is the only one that seems to work with PHP. I actually thought you had to have one of the apache2-mpm-* packages, to install apache2, but I might have been mistaken.

I would be curious to know what packages you ended up with differently, or what apt-get install *** you used. ie, 'apt-get install php4 apache2'... etc...
