Please see my post above: basically, if you had been using apt-get before you used aptitude, that could produce issues. In that case, before you install anything with aptitude enter aptitude keep-all and you should be fine. You could also install with apt-get instead of aptitude. More generally, you shouldn't need to reinstall if packages get removed, since you can always reinstall them with apt-get, aptitude, synaptic, etc.

I am sorry for not making this clear beforehand, I have gotten around the problem of issuing the command:

Quote:
aptitude install build-essential module-assistant
by downloading the Lenny CD and installing cleanly from there. I've managed to reach up to step 4:

Code:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run
However the NVIDIA installer would give this error:

Quote:
No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li
ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f
rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: Yes)
To which I tried to solve by, please see previous post.

After that I issued:

Code:
CC=gcc-4.1 sh NVIDIA-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run
Which surprisingly issues the same error.

I would now try this suggestion:

Quote:
1 - download the Nvidia propriatery drivers from nvidia.com

run the command uname -r and see what kernel you're using and where you see *, make sure you grab the same kernel.

sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-*
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.24-1-*
sudo apt-get install gcc

2 - reboot into the new kernel.

Then simply press "ctl + alt + f1"

The suggestion you now plan to try is the same as my suggestion which has not been working for you. I think that the problem may be that you have not properly changed your CC variable to gcc-4.1. You need to enter two different commands. First enter this:
Code:
export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.1
Then enter
Code:
sh NVIDIA-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run

This is now my 13th try. Must be a lucky number.

I can't believe it. I basically combined all of the advices of everyone here and

IT WORKED! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I INSTALLED NVIDIA DRIVERS ON TESTING!!!! WOOPEE!! TO ALL WHO HELPED THANKS!!!!

Special thanks goes Telemachos. Thank you for your great great help

note: 2.6.24 seems to always break my sound card

/start of success

1. Clean Install of Lenny Testing iso CD
2. Then an upgrade of Kernel from 2.6.22 to 2.6.24
Code:
$ sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-686
$ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.24-1-686
# aptitude install build-essential module-assistant
# module-assistant prepare
# apt-get install gcc-4.1
# export CC=gcc-4.1
# CC=gcc-4.1 sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run
/end of success
/start of sound card problem

Note: Would you guys still be interested in helping me with the sound problem Anyway, it's ok with me you guys and the *ahem* sexy gal there has already done more than enough. But if anyone is interested here it is:

Quote:
The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.
I will install some 3D games as I wait.

Just recently I upgraded to the 2.6.24 kernel and chose not to abort the installation at the gcc error as suggested earlier:
Quote:
Ignore that message, I know it says if the versions differ that it wont work, but it Lies
And the module loads, works, and pumps out the view, thanks bro.
