Agreed. I have both upgraded from Etch and done a clean install. This is my 12th attempt - a clean install from a downloaded Testing iso. So far the only thing I have added is pppoeconf. Please point me to the logs that you require.
Please see my post above: basically, if you had been using apt-get before you used aptitude, that could produce issues. In that case, before you install anything with aptitude enter aptitude keep-all and you should be fine. You could also install with apt-get instead of aptitude. More generally, you shouldn't need to reinstall if packages get removed, since you can always reinstall them with apt-get, aptitude, synaptic, etc.
I am sorry for not making this clear beforehand, I have gotten around the problem of issuing the command:
Quote:
aptitude install build-essential module-assistant
by downloading the Lenny CD and installing cleanly from there. I've managed to reach up to step 4:
Code:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run
However the NVIDIA installer would give this error:
Quote:
No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li
ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f
rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: Yes)
To which I tried to solve by, please see previous post.
After that I issued:
Code:
CC=gcc-4.1 sh NVIDIA-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run
Which surprisingly issues the same error.
I would now try this suggestion:
Quote:
1 - download the Nvidia propriatery drivers from nvidia.com
run the command uname -r and see what kernel you're using and where you see *, make sure you grab the same kernel.

The suggestion you now plan to try is the same as my suggestion which has not been working for you. I think that the problem may be that you have not properly changed your CC variable to gcc-4.1. You need to enter two different commands. First enter this:
Note: Would you guys still be interested in helping me with the sound problem Anyway, it's ok with me you guys and the *ahem* sexy gal there has already done more than enough. But if anyone is interested here it is:

The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.
You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.
