another "bad page state" error

Message received in /var/log/messages after starting Thunderbird-1.5.0.7 in Debian Etch on an Athlon t-bird with 768M memory, running 2.6.17-2-486 kernel and gnome 2.14. Machine functions fine, as does thunderbird. When searching logs I see that mysql also had this error twice about a week ago.

Note the similar bold passages. Could be bad memory?
I will now reboot and experiment. Thanks for any clues.

Silly question: Is it possible to test memory while a machine is running linux?

Edit: I ran memtest+86 for several hours without error, so I'm thinking it's the hard-drive or partitioning. (guess.) Etch is installed on an ext3 filesytem. Maybe I'll boot a live cd and run fsck.
