my phone is rooted and it has Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
and I have up-to-date android-platform-tools. check #9 and #7 above posts.

I doesn't appear ADB needs any special dependencies other than Java, and no special configurations or permissions. I just tested my HTC Rezound with ADB as root on a very minimal install of Wheezy (i386) that barely runs Fluxbox. Installed Iceweasel and default-jre and I was good to go.

AFAIK, adb doesn't depend on java. Just libc6, ssl and zlib.

I'm sure you're right. I installed platform-tools through the SDK Manager GUI though, which did require Java.
