Adjusting my Screen's Resolution

I just got debian and am still new to some aspects of linux. When installing the x-window software i chose 1024x768 but when i installed gnome its still being displayed in 800x600 mode. I've tried reading other posts and i tried to figure out how to edit the file (i forget the name of it) but i realized i have no idea how to do that. I'ma need detailed steps for how to fix this problem (as i am a nub and will prolly mess up if something's not clear). Thank you very much for your help in advance!!!!

Get to a terminal and run: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
Choose your resolution and restart Gnome with: /etc/init.d/gdm restart

However unlikely, but is 1024x768 supported by your card and monitor? Have you tried other resolution modes? Do you perhaps use xdm for logging in?

I would be willing to bet that you did not convert your XF86Config file over to XF86Config-4... I made that same mistake too whe I first installed Debian...

When you set it up at first.. or anytime you run "xf86config" fron terminal... it writes to file do XF86Config under /etc/X11/

You will also notice a file called XF86Config-4 in the same directory.... by default in debian (i don't know why) it checks XF86Config-4 before the other... so backup your current config file..

In terminal (as root) to

1.) cd /etc/X11
2.) cp XF86Config-4 XF86Config-4.old
3.) cp XF86Config XF86Config-4
4.) exit

Then restart X...

This should fix your problem... If you chose the wrong type of Viseo card driver... you may get an XServer error and won't start... so from the command prompt... again as root... run xf86config and copy the file over again.... if you can get it to work right... then just replace the backup "XF86Config-4.old" back to "XF86Config-4"

cd /etc/X11
cp XF86Config-4.old XF86Config-4

then restart X and you should be abck just fine... (though in 800x600)

using gedit or your favorite text editor... open up /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and scroll down until you find the lines that give the different resolutions for the different color settings... and under the one for "24" just add in 1024x768 if it's not there... save and restart X... that one will work...

Good Luck!

#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

at the end of this, it will ask you if you want to create a Config-4 file, say yes, that's it.
