Adding language support

Is there a way to add more language support without reinstalling the whole system?
Which packages are selected when a particular language is chosen in tasksel?

Can anyone help me? Thanks a lot:newbie:

In KDE it's really easy. I just used apt-get to install aptitude and installed the language I needed from there.
System wide I'm not sure, I think you need locale support for that.

Kroppus 12-11-2003 09:00 AM

I think this one is for system-wide settings. *not sure*
dpkg-reconfigure locales

that's the one 've been using.
Or do you mean to the support for local languages i the kernel?
It should be possible to build the modules and install them in a running kernel. But i have no idea how you do that. :)
I just wait for a new test version to come out so that i've got a brand new kernel to compile anyway. :)

@Kroppus: that did it for me! I always get: locale not found turning to bla bla (or something) your option worked. No more disturbing messages at compiling! Thanx

Kroppus 12-11-2003 03:21 PM

No problem :)
I spent some time wondering what that was for until i tried to get nrwegian signs to work in console :)

a bit more help please

Thanks a lot, guys.
I just figured out that 'dpkg-reconfigure locales' generates new locales support(charset precisely)
But what I am asking seems to be another issue.
In KDE control center, I have language(default C) and charset (iso-xxx).
I have got the correct locale installed, but I need the language support to enable
displaying those charset.

Can anyone help me a bit more?
Thanks.

With kde i'd think that it was enough to use kcontrol
The KDE Control Center and look at Regional settings..

Now i'm not sure what version you're running. If it's woody then you're probably stuck with an old KDE, and me with unstable can't even get it to install. (uninstallable library)
Take a look at KDE Control Center or the Desktop Setup Wizard.
*evil grin*
Or drop KDE and go over to Blackbox or Enlightenment :)

Thanks Twinkers, and Kroppus!

This sounds like what I'm looking for :) I found a fun variant of Knoppix called Famelix, but it only has the protugese language installed! I am planning on adding English, and then re-creating the Live CD ... the Brazilians went to som etrouble to make it look a lot like Winblows XP, so I'm going to have some fun with the helpdesk guy at work ;-)

csantos67 If you want some real fun
Download PHLAK live linux and boot that with the
DESKTOP=SNEAKY
option....
You'll be looking at a modifeid XP screen with working menus and stuff...
*did that at school and almost drove another student crazy*
He was sure it was XP and so mad when he couldn't do anything...
*really evil grin*
I just love that distro after that :)
*never leaves home without it on a cd*

awesome

that's awesome! I couldn't get Famelix to work, they removed all non-Portuguese support :-| I used apt-get install aptitude, apt-get install language-env, and dpkg-reconfigure locales

and set the preferences for us-en ( I tried all the ISO variants too ) but the KDE control panel never reflected that any language other than Portuguese was installed. I think I would have had to rebuild the entire distro.

I'll try downloading PHLAK :-D

Thanks!

RE: awesome

I talk to the people of FAMELIX in FISL (POA_Brazil), about localization,
and they say that the project got more response then they are expecting.
They, will work to put the project in a good repository
and make a localization for English, others localizations will be accepted
by volunteers.

Re: awesome

Cool, I'll look foward to that release. Also I think that making the desktop look like XP is a nice touch, and its fun too.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!
