adding ip aliasing support in 2.2.20 kernel - woody

Hi I got an old (realy old) woody that needs a second IP addres, as I understand kernel 2.2 doesn't support that by default and I need to modify it in order to get IP ailiases to work. I would realy apriciate any help you guys/gals can give me so I can avoid having to rebuild the server (coustemer wouldn't be happy) or that I dont have to recompile the whole kernel (I wouldn't be happy ).

Thank you in advance.

If it wasn't enabled in the kernel, it will have to be rebuilt.
You might try iproute2

ip addr add 10.10.10.2/29 dev eth0 brd +

where 10.10.10.2 is the second ip, 29 is the cidr mask, eth0 is the interface to alias.
You can add it to /etc/network/interfaces like so
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 10.10.10.4
gateway 10.10.10.1
netmask 255.255.255.248
broadcast 10.10.10.6
up ip addr add 10.10.10.2/29 dev eth0 brd +

OK thanks I made the new kernel it's just waiting for the last user to go home so I can do the install / reboot

btw I couldn't find iproute2 with dselect and iproute requires two aditional kernel parametars wich I don't have enabled

wish me luck with the reboot, I relay hate going to this coustomers site
