If you have Android 6 then I think you have to allow the usb connection. Graphical file managers should either allow you to view disk and or show information/properties.

Do you have Android 6? Do you have a file manager that you like or can get one?

Guess I should test this myself.

I'm not sure how it works with Mate; I use XFCE4. If I recall correctly, the feature of being able to browse smart phones mostly didn't work in Wheezy, but it does work in Jessie (Debian 8, the current stable release). I have used Moto G for this.

Why did you reboot? jmtpfs is command line program, what did you expect?

i did mkdir ~/android and then sudo jmtpfs android.
atux@netbook:~$ sudo jmtpfs android/
Device 0 (VID=22b8 and PID=2e82) is UNKNOWN.
Please report this VID/PID and the device model to the libmtp development team
Android device detected, assigning default bug flags
atux@netbook:~$

i would like to automount it as user and see it in the mate-desktop file manager.

this is happening because wheezy is older than your phone.
there's a way to manually add the pid and vid to some database, i forget which one.

go to the appstore and install webdav server ( i use the pro versin as it is so good ) start it up on your phone and it will mount your phones storzge as a webdav you can set the root of the disk you will see, password etc.
I am not the developer of the webdav server.
