I got libdvdcss2, and played my video 'Effi Briest'. Worked fine, until it came to the end of the first section. Then it just repeats the first chapter.

Is this a known glitch?

I think not all dvd playing software knows how to navigate chapters (ie not a libdvdcss2 related problem). Which ones have you tried? Eg. xine, mplayer, totem, etc.

Prdroski, for flash try apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree. Sorry about that. And while you're at it delete swfdec. You should see three or four swfdec installed. It comes with the default install. That's an open source flash plugin. I've never had any luck with it. Again, use Synaptic if you can. It's easier. See your taskbar. System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. You are prompted for your root pswd. Open that up and over to the right you'll see a 'Search' button.

And don't forget the w32codecs. And Java also.

Thanks.

I only have Movie Player installed at present. I thought they all used the same engine, just had different front-ends. Do you think a different player might play a DVD?

I thought maybe there was a problem with my internal DVD drive, although it's only 6 months old, so I bought and external usb Sony. But that is just as haphazard.

As I said, it plays the first chapter, then stops and repeats. Do I need to use regionset?

Sorry I have no idea what "Movie Player" is.

Any players that use libdvdnav4 should let you navigate the dvd menus, select chapers etc. For example vlc and ogle.

No, libdvdcss should take care of cracking that for you.

Hi, well I installed Ogle. Now I can navigate the chapters on a dvd. Play any chapter. Works fine, except: there is no sound!

Debian = expect the unexpected!

How do I tell Pulse that Ogle is playing a film? Pulse says no application is currently using the server.

The good news is, now Totem can navigate the dvd, and has sound! Wow!

Try this:

su
passwd:
modprobe ath9k

And then use wicd.

If that doesn't work, I would try Debian testing. There's no reason to use stable on a lappy.

Well, thanks for that.

I have wicd installed. The wireless works fine, just I can't get into the network cos they're WEP. Never mind, on the 12th I'll have internet adsl! Woohoo.

Pedroski, If I may suggest, start a new thread for each problem. It's not only proper form but it allows you to focus on the problem at hand. In this thread alone, you've asked about Java, Flash, DVD play back and wireless networking. Plus you've learned about repos and many other things.

In a post like this, working on so many problem prevents you from zeroing in on one thing; Touching on many and not quite addressing all of them.

So, you've taken care of wireless. Good for you! I think that was the origin of this thread. Wasn't it? I forget. Now is the time to start a new thread to address the next problem. And don't go off track. Work on it until you get it fixed. Then post a new thread for the next problem. Works best that way.
