a different way to get sarge and kde 3.2
Seems as though there have been many post on getting Sarge up and running, so I thought I would post 1 method of doing it, and gettting KDE 3.2 as well. This is not fool proof, but it does work for me. It leaves a good bit of configuration to be accomplished. As I only have a dialup at 28.8, netinstall is not an option and my particular setup seems to have some difficulty with the new installer. Its kind of a long way around, but if your dialup is as slow as mine, it's an option.
1. Have a someone download the first 3 Sarge iso's and cd1 of woody, this will be plenty to get the most needed apps (KDE,X,CUPS, Synaptic, and kernels)
2. Start by installing woody (stable). After you make the system bootable, reboot and finish the installation. DON'T run TASKSEL or DSELECT, or security updates, simply answer no. After logging in, do
#apt-cdrom add
do this for each of the 3 cd's
#nano -w /etc/apt/sources.list (or vi etc etc)
edit each of the Sarge lines and remove "main/debian-installer"
remove the line for woody, comment out the security updates, save the file and exit.
#apt-get update
#apt-get dist-upgrade
#/sbin/lilo
reboot
3. Login
#aptitude
f10,> not installed, > "+" on x11 and KDE
"g"
follow prompts
exit aptitude
add hdc=ide-scsi (hdd etc) to append line of /etc/lilo.conf if you have a cd-burner
#ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom (if burner is cdrom...sdc0 cdrom1 should be /dev/scd1 /dev/cdrom1
#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
/sbin/lilo
reboot
you should now have Sarge up and running and be able to apt-get install anything on the cd's including the ever popular synaptic for a graphical front-end to apt-get.
Hope it helps,
