793mb monitor problesm on debian and mephis

Hello all

I have been playing around with mepis and debian for a bit now and love it but for some reason i am having trouble configuring the monitor.

i have read the man pages for both X86 config and the config file it self and have done a few changes on the config file.
but every change i do on the config file eather does not work or makes xserver crash.

What im trying to do is achive a resolution of 1280x1024 i know for a fact that my computer can support this because fedora and mandrake both run at this resolution with a 24 depth.

i do not have my monitor maunal so i had to go with the specs from a online store that sells the monitor. for some reason i could not find the maunals at samsung website. Eather way every V and H rate i try i cannot get it to work. here is what my current xconfig file says:

install and copy config from other distro. If it works: it will continue to work. Linux is Linux and X11 is X11

Code:
HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0 # Warning: This may fry old Monitors
VertRefresh 50.0 - 70.0 # Very conservative. May flicker.
change those lines. for example, mine say:
Code:
HorizSync 30-86
VertRefresh 50-150
but my monitor can do 1600x1200.

p.s. next time you paste a file, put it in the code vb tag.

I have had a similar experience as you. I thought that the config file from Mepis looked like you have more control over your hardware, but after researching, I found that the XFree86-4 file on Mepis actually relates to an older setup than the Debian Sarge config file. So here is my XFree84-4 config file from Debian. I have the Nvidia driver loaded so be aware that my driver will be different, and also I have taken out 'GLcore' and 'Dri' to satisfy Nvidia. I do not know if this will work under Mepis, but you can give it a go - just make sure you back up your original first!!!
