2 simple questions regarding X and fonts

I am trying to get Sarge working on my laptop with the 2.6.3 kernel (so I can use ndsiwrapper). I am running into trouble bring X up. (configured with fglrxconfig - an ATI tool downloaded for my video card).
The log file tells me that the "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts" directory doesn't exist (I checked - it isn't there), and that is why X wont start.

I have 2 questions:

1. Do i need to apt-get install KDE or Gnome to get the fonts i need, or have I screwed something else up previously?

2. Why am I typing "X" to start X instead of "startx"? Am I starting the wrong application - why isn't the command "startx" found?

Thanks.

You should check to make sure that you have the xbase-clients package installed that contains the startx file and see what you have installed for the xfonts packages as well.

[code]
>$ dpkg -S startx
xbase-clients: /usr/X11R6/bin/startx
xbase-clients: /usr/X11R6/man/man1/startx.1x.gz

>$ COLUMNS=125 dpkg -l | grep xfonts
ii xfonts-100dpi 4.3.0-5 100 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-100dpi-transcoded 4.3.0-5 100 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 10646-1)
ii xfonts-75dpi 4.3.0-5 75 dpi fonts for X
ii xfonts-75dpi-transcoded 4.3.0-5 75 dpi fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 10646-1)
ii xfonts-base 4.3.0-5 standard fonts for X
ii xfonts-base-transcoded 4.3.0-5 standard fonts for X (transcoded from ISO 10646-1)
ii xfonts-konsole 3.2.1-1 Fonts used by the KDE Konsole
ii xfonts-scalable 4.3.0-5 scalable fonts for X
ii xfonts-scalable-nonfree 4.2.0-2 non-free Type1 and TrueType fonts from XFree86
