vga = 791
vga = 794
which normally work only gives a blank screen

switching to vga=normal solves blank screen

tried on two different installs (one with grub & bootsplash the other with lilo, X, nobootsplash or bootlogo)--same result

all versions of kernels from 2.6.0 until 2.6.8 have not exhibited this problem--kept kernel config without change from 2.6.8-7 to 2.6.9-1

will try to use the fbset utility to diagnose

has anyone else had this problem?
any suggestions?

In the kernel config, go to Device Drivers, Graphics support and check for these:

Console display driver support[*]  Video mode selection support

  [ ] MDA text console (dual-headed) (EXPERIMENTAL)[*] Framebuffer Console support

  [ ]  Select compiled-in fonts

Virtual Framebuffer Support (only for testing!) is just for testing, does not have to do with the basic vga mode selection. However, thank you. If in fact it needs to be checked would indicate a bug or equivalent in the kernel. Having googled before making this reply, i see that there are several problems dealing with the framebuffer's mode selection.

My problems are not that horrific as my machine boot in 80x25 (vga=normal). Others have reported corruption at the tops of screens and hard lockups with the debian kernel. Some have even recompiled without the support. I may try lower resolution and lower bit depth modes possibly-->773, 790 (1024 x 768) or 771, 787, 788 (800x 600).

If yours is working, great! Maybe its a machine or timing dependency thingy. Dunno! But will be listening and checking for kernel revisions.
