Yes I knew that it is a size, but you don't need vmlinuz size for what you want to do. I believe in the link you posted druuna explained some things very well (I had a quick look).
There's an error;
Quote:
'cannot copy file from cdrom'
...but you said you want to install without cd/dvd I believe, so what you want to do?
but vmlinuz is bad. I used the size to identify 'version' instead of md5sum. that last version druuna gave me produces that error. it is referring to iso as cdrom, I guess.
can you mix vmlinuz with different initrd.gz ?
I think I'll just give up and install the damn thing from dvd.
ps. sorry for starting another thread about this. I'd delete it.
Traditionally, UNIX platforms called the kernel image /unix. With the development of virtual memory, kernels that supported this feature were given the vm- prefix to differentiate them. The name vmlinux is a mutation of vmunix, while in vmlinuz the letter z at the end denotes that it is compressed.
Well I won't say much, I'll post two links and I'll tell you what I've learned over the years; if you're using Linux you need to remember two words; search and read.
