Problem when installing

hey i decided to try to install the DSL distro for the first time yesterday on my k63 computer (500mhz) and i put the cd in an it loads and gets ready, but then it reaches a blank, black screen with a blinking cursor and on small penguin just sitting there. Nothing happens after that..well I only let it sit like that for about 10 minutes and then decided that nothing was going to happen. I couldnt type anything either.

What should I do?

thanks

Sounds to me like your video card isnt compatiable with that video mode on boot. If you use slackware linux, you can turn that mode off (the screen with the little penguin, not all video cards can do that). I'd try slack and see if that fixes it. Or you could by a new video card.

I hardly think the video card is the problem. First off, this is onboard video and basic and nothing special or crazy. Second, I CAN see everything just fine. The installation just stops at the command line page where there is a blinking cursor and little penguine. I guess I will try slack on it too, i just wanted to solve this prob.

thanks

Its not exactly that your video card isn't linux compatiable, after all you CAN see things. Its just that your video card may not be capable of producing that screen properly. So your computer freezes there as your onboard video tries unsuccessfully to render that screen on boot up. When you install slackware you'll be offered the option to turn that on or off (the screen with the penguin) when the computer boots. There you can read all about it, they explain it alot better than I do.

I may not be right, but your problem sounds very similar to what they described.
