installing to ram

Is it possible to install DSL completly to ram? So that I can take out the cd and avoid all slowdown from a crappy cd-rom? If not is there such distro like this? I am not looking for a super small ram distro like grey cat. I am looking for a distro with usability akin to DSL and feather linux. (fluxbox, dillo, icq client etc.)

Thanks in advance

LifeBoat is a rescue CD which runs entirely in ram and which allows you to remove the CD after boot. You can use LifeBoat to create a system which runs entirely in ram. Use the LifeBoat addons feature to create your own customized system.

Lifeboat

It seems that the lifeboat website is broken, but you can still get at the documentation. It looks like a very intereestig project and I am going to see how it works for me. I don't think I am going to go through with customizing it. It is possible to add X, Fluxbox, Dillo etc. but it is more of a proccess then my skills can handle. Maybe when my skills have improved.

I did find a solution though. Feather linux. If you issue the command
"knoppix toram" it will load into ram. It takes up 135mb when uncompressed.

Thanks for your help

"It seems that the lifeboat website is broken"

I created the LifeBoat web site to conform to XHTML standards. Several people have told me that it does not work on Internet Explorer. After looking through the problem I decided to let Microsoft fix IE rather than programming around the deliberate design problems in IE. If you having problems with the LifeBoat web site with any browser other than IE then please let me know at the LifeBoat email address.

it works

I tried the LifeBoat site with firebird and it works. I am going to experiment with it later this week.

A question about lifeboat:

The webpage says that lifeboat is distrobution dependant. Would it be alot of work to mod it into a knoppix style distro, that still runs from ram? When I say knoppix style I mean, has good hardware auto-detection??

I haven't looked into that. Off the top of my head I think that it can be done reasonably easily. I think that the knoppix hardware detection code is Open Source. So you could add the knoppix hardware detection code to LifeBoat using the addons feature. If you get that to work then please consider donating your code to the LifeBoat contributed addons so other people can use it.

I think I am going to look into this more. If I make any progress, I will send it your way. I won't be able to do much work on it for about a month. But it is very interesting so I will forsure investigate.

Thanks
