installing packages without internet

I was wondering if it was possible to install extra programs on DSL without connecting to the internet. I have been unable to because it does not include GCC, and you need the internet to enable the debian package system. If this isn't possible, then could someone suggest another distro that will run with reasonable speed in gui mode on a 200Mhz processor with 32MB ram?

hm, well any distro, you just cant really use kde, as it is bloated as a week old dead whale in the desert. fluxbox is really fast, as is blackbox, and windowmaker. you just need to build your own kernel and leave out the stuff you dont need at all, and build in what you do need, so that you dont have to have hotplug running.

at any rate, cant you use the debian package system to get gcc.. and make, and the build tools you need. gentoo is excedingly fast, cause it is optimized, but installing can be a pain on a slow machine. cant you install more memory. dang, 32 is a limit. slackware runs on 8 meg, but seriously, X needs like 64 and recommends at least 128.

You can install the gcc.dsl.
My dsl ran on an ibm166+ and 24 MB RAM and 64MB swap without probs. Now it's running with 64MB and I use abiword as a simple word processor, xmms, xine, firefox, sylpheed ...

You can access the Internet with dsl very easy. If it doesn't work then probably your modem or whatever you use is not properly configured.
