Installing MyDSL extentions with DSL Embedded. Problems!

Good morning,

So, I want to install MyDSL extensions and save my settings when using MyDSL embedded, so I can run Linux programs on my Windows PC when I can't find a Windows alternative. The main program I'm thinking of is FontForge.

So, I installed everything, and then ran DSL embedded. But of course, when I tried to install a MyDSL extension, it didn't have anywhere to save it.

So, I looked at the instructions again and discovered that I had to create a virtual hard drive and run the "dsl-vhd.bat" version instead. So I did all that.

Here's my problem.

Now, when I try to run the MyDSL browser I get an error message that it cannot download the index, and that I may have "gremlins in my internets". Everything else, including the web browsers, work fine though.

So, does anybody have experience with this problem and can advise me how I can solve it?

Also, is it possible to install DEB packages on DSL-Embedded?

Thanks in advance!

Same Problem

I too have the same problem as you and have not figured out a way to fix it. I have tried to download the files and save them to /mnt/hdb/mydsl and have been unsuccessful. I have tried to move the files once downloaded to the /mnt/hdb/mydsl and that don't work either. I get error messages that the drive may need to be mounted, but the drive is mounted and is mounted on startup as far as I know. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Fixed, I hope

I have been messing with this since I first started using the embedded version and have been unable to find a solution. I may have fixed the problem on my own. I have been able to download and install the extensions using MyDSL. I then shutdown the system and restarted it and the downloaded packages were still there. So here is what I did:

Startup DSL Embeded using the DSL-VHD.bat file. When the desktop appears open a terminal window and type the following commands:

sudo chmod 777 /mnt/hdb
sudo chmod 777 /mnt/hdb/mydsl
sudo chmod 777 /mnt/hdb/mydsl/modules

After I did this I opened up MyDSL and it was working just like I described above. If anything changes and it stops working, I will keep everyone posted. Hopefully it is fixed permanently.

On a side note, if anyone knows one of the administrators of the official DSL forum tell them thanks for nothing since they were of absolutely no help since I was unable to post any questions. They will also not be getting the solution since I can't post.

Thanks for this tip! It solved my problem.

Question: Is chmod persistant when you reboot?

Persistence

If by persistent you mean it works the next time you start up, then yes as far as I can tell it is. And I will tell you that I like this distro even better now that I can use the extensions in the embedded version. I really need to buy the DSL book, maybe that will help me figure out some of this stuff a little earlier.

What I did using XShell with root access:

1.- cd /mnt/hdb/mydsl/

2.- wget htttp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/mydsl/system/gcc1-with-libs.dsl or any package found there.

3.- the extension started to download and saved automatically on /mnt/hdb/mydsl

4.- also save the md5 signature gcc1-with-libs.dsl.md5.txt on that dir

5.- shutdown -h now

6.- Restart using dsl-vhd.bat

Also you can find more on:

I hope this helps.
