howto upgrade DSM?

I bought a DSM from the DSL store a couple of years ago (it has DSL version 2.0 I think). It has 512MB compact flash with DSL preinstalled on it.
I see that DSL-3.4.4 is out and I want to ungrade and try some other uses.
1) How can I upgrade or must I do a fresh install?
2) Do I have a frugal install or regular ?
3) If a fresh install is called for how Would I do that?
Thanks in advance.
