DSL Won't Install To Hard Drive

DSL will not install to my computers hard drive. When I try to use cfdisk or fdisk, it says it cannot access the hard drive. I had to use my FC1 CD in rescue mode to partition the hard drive. The dive is hda and is partitioned so it contains the single bootable partition hda1. I have tried both DSL frugal and normal install, and both grub and lilo bootloaders. It appears to install just fine, but when I reboot the computer, it says Missing Operating System. Why is this?
