DSL dual-boot with win2k

Howdy all,

I have an old Toshiba Satellite 2230CDS with win2k on it, and I want to install DSL 3.4.4 on it as a dual-boot. I'm very familiar with setting up a dual boot with other distros, but I have a few questions concerning DSL.

Do I use the frugal install or the hdd install?

Does it install lilo or grub? or do I need a boot disc?

Will I need to do any editing to /boot/lilo or grub/ to have win2k detected? or will it be automatically detected?

I'll be using a GParted disc to set up the partitions, will that be detected by DSL?

I need to definitely keep the win2k on this laptop, but want to have linux on it as well. It is a very old laptop, that I haven't been able to find much out about. So if anyone knows about it, or has had some experience with it; I greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Scott

well this may be your specs
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtop...f97f09ed73efed

can not see tho, how did you install 2K....you must have more ram than 64 Megs

2) I suggest you first confirm some specs....dsl and puppy are good choices but have you got any of them to boot?

Thanks for the response. I have successful had DSL 3.4.4 running on it live, and two variations of Puppy as well. Also had a dual-boot with Xubuntu, but it ran slower than all hell.

It has a 6gb hdd, with 160mb RAM. Win2k runs really nicely on it until I get too much going on.

ok well part 1...boot into 2k and defrag so everything is to the left edge

2) resize with with either ntfsresize or qtparted or gparted
http://man.linux-ntfs.org/ntfsresize.8.html
note I would still defrag b4 ntfsresize...to be safe

3) http://puppylinux.org/wikka/HardDiskInstall has instructions based on a clean install of 2k and clean install of puppy

IMHO 160 megs will be ok with puppy http://puppylinux.org/wikka/puppyapps

and puppy likes ext3 hd format for itself and grub

4) so you can read my signature on grub if you like as well

so its hd install using a puppy live cd after you have done some defrag and partition stuff
