compiling to get software in DSL

Hello, I may need to install something by source code in DSL. How can I get the compiling tools needed in DSL to do it? I want to compile VLC for DSL, and I want the newer version of MPlayer without having to install Apt or Synaptic.

I installed gcc using mydsl extension browser.I would be very suprised if you got everything you needed to compile a new version of either VLC or Mplayer though.DSL is based on Debian woody so some of it is a little old.
