You don't need to export your path to use it

but when I type java -version it says that java is an unknown command...

and when i installed j2sdk1.4 it pulled the j2re with it, so that should be there as well

i am using j2sdk1.4 on my debian box and when i type java -version i get the version using a graphical interface(desktop) or not.
open a new terminal and type again. if it fails try
Code:
which java
Code:
dpkg -L j2sdk1.4|grep bin|grep java
it is not necessary to logout-login but you could do so to check again

"which java" gives no output.
"java -version" still says
bash: java: command not found

i know that DSL isn't strictly debian, but this should still work, right? what am i missing?

this works fine on my MEPIS box...

(edited)
OK, I tried apt-get install j2sdk* and this time two errors:

W: cannot stat source package list: www.tux.org sid/Main Packages...
E: You don't have enough space in /var/cache/apt/archives

SO I don't have Java SDK like I thought...

This whole install is on a USB drive with a qemu.img of about 200MBs. What can I remove to give APT more space? For example, I don't need:
Dillo
Siag
Beaver
Sylpheed
FLWriter
xZGV
but these aren't .deb (apt) packages so I am not sure how to remove them...
