Exclamation Adding fonts in DSL

I'm trying to add fonts to the system. Whenever I try to run this command:

xset fp+ /path/to/fonts

I get this:

xset: bad font path element (#51), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

I have fonts.dir in each directory. The permissions are set 777. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
