Why is CL9.0 sooo slow????

Why is CL9.0 so slow? The computer is an athlon xp 1600, 256mb ram, 100GB hdd. It has another win2k and suse 8.2 running perfectly.
Am I supposed to configure something? I just installed it, and it's running out of the box. It's ok, so far, I am enjoying it, but it is really slow.
How can I fix that?

Are you using hdparm?
Try to check the speed of your HD...
