It gets better over time

I re-installed Conectiva 10 again on the same machine. However this time I burned brand new ISOs from my original download. I think that the new discs may have helped to make this installation experience better.

I did a new clean install of the default desktop client.

What is now different: I can now play music CDs and multimedia CDs without having to manually configure the drives.

I can now query the modem. But I have yet to successfully get it to dial out.

I have managed to hang the machine up on K3B. ( I haven't decided if this is hardware or software releted.)

I have not yet applied the updates from the update CD. I hesitate to do so because I fear that it may cause problems.

My preliminary conclusion is that this Distro is solid and stable. The installation media (the CD-Rs) may be a source of problems if the disc quality is imperfect. My suggestion to others is make sure that your installation media is perfect before you burn the ISO image. Any imperfections in the CD-R media could mean the difference between a easy install vs a Nightmare install.

So give it a try if you are searching for a distro that is just right for you.

Well, since they have now been bought by Mandrake, i can't wait to see what kind of distro they come up with because both mandrake and Conectiva have people who are very creative.

The only distro that has ever detected my modem was suse.

It it a winmodem coz most serial modems work fine out of the box.

Update:

I installed the Official Updates released 3/11/05

The patches fixed my problem with K3B.

I also was able to edit to grub2 boot loader configuration using Webmin. Why you ask...Because the updated kernel is not set as the default boot option. The initial install of Conectiva 10 remains as the default option. And if you boot using the old uppatched kernel after upgrading you only have a command line OS.

My testing is almost done on the desktop evaluation. I am going to try to set up Conectiva 10 as a LAMP server next.

Wish me luck.
