I'm not crazy about it either TBH. I'm sticking with 6.x for new installs but I realize I need to upgrade eventually. I just don't like how everything is so different, like the service command does not even work right, they're trying to do everything too differently than standard. There was some other weird stuff with networking I was not too fond of either. TBH I did not really give it a chance, but I did not really like it when I tried it.

Granted, I’m the furthest thing from a Linux professional but I know that CentOS certainly isn’t a newbies Linux.

That said I installed CentOS 6.x and upgraded it several times to version 6.7. I liked it and decided to try to upgrade to CentOS 7.

CentOS 7 et al is a dog by any measure and I’m surprised that the authors of this version and KDE just stinks. It shouldn’t be that hard to install and use.

Example; it is a real issue to create a desk top launcher and the list goes on.

It’s like half-finished and shouldn’t have been released. A release with all sort of bugs give CentOS a bad name and that shouldn’t be.

Just my opinion.

I'm not fond of Dedoimedo reviews. He treats it like it's supposed to function like Ubuntu. Of course it's not going to have multimedia codecs out of the box. That's not what it's intended to be used as (out of the box).

Some other points:

• I haven't used the LiveCD installer, but using the standard installer has given me no problems. I've done it a few times and no hiccups occurred. I couldn't say the same for Ubuntu's installer which didn't always work when installing it to a UEFI partition.
• The notification of a login failure is normal behavior of GDM.
• PackageKit is the default GUI package manager. If you don't like that, there's also yumex in EPEL. Apper probably wasn't included because it tends to be broken in one form or another. Ask the KDE guys why it doesn't work.

The rest of his review is just him saying things were incomplete because the 3rd party repos weren't available, which isn't CentOS's fault in any way.

As for the speed issues, that's always going to be a subjective question. I suspect most were complaining about Gnome. The update to 3.14 probably fixed some of those issues.

XFS's 0-byte file size issue was fixed back in 2007.

If the dstro isn’t complete and including apps from anyone which don’t work is a real problem, including code which isn’t complete is just wrong. It’s simple, if it doesn’t work don’t included it. In my opinion someone jumped the gun on this one.

I’ll go back and look at ver. 7 again in the near future

Releasing an incomplete dstro creates headaches for all users.
