Install FreeBSD from Harddrive with GRUB

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I am wondering if there is a way to boot a FreeBSD sysinstall session from GRUB. This, for example, can be accomplished for many GNU/Linux distributions by using the appropriate installation boot kernel and initrd in the distribution release tree. I am not sure if these exist in BSD, or where to find them. My Google searches on this topic have thus far been fruitless. Why not just burn the CDs? I don't have any CDRs at the moment, but further more am ideologically opposed to CDs as a distribution medium in comparison to reasonable sources like FTP.

I don't know the answer, but see post #6 from this thread. Hopefully it'll give you some clues about how to approach this.

I've had success with this script by Dario Freni

lujan -

Thanks for the link. Has anyone else had luck in finding a method which does not require a pen drive - i.e. something you can do to boot right from the harddrive?

Thanks,
Jameson
