this wiki article on changing keyboard layouts might be helpful.

Go to menu-settings-modules an load keyboard module. A widget will appear on the shelf with question mark. Click on the widget and under settings add new layout with your language.

I go to
setting -->Modules ---> Utilities--> Keyboard, then nothing here, No any package under Utilities I attached the screen copy. Thanks for help. |
did you click on the ? question mark in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen by the battery charge indicator?
|
I clicked the ? and found nothing in Keyboard setting, then I added both US and CN. now I can see a CN icon
on desktop. But when I clicked it, nothing happened. so what I should do next that can input Chinese ? Just like google pinyin in Android , can switch the input between English and Chinese. Thanks for the help. |
interesting. i am using bodhi 5.1
greek λξλκξδλαδφλκ thai ะ้ฟา and hebrew חךלגחכשלחגךלחכד are working, but chinese (my keyboard is set to it now and typing english) isn't doing so. i will keep poking around and let you know if i can get it to work :) |
Hi Cordex,
Thank you very much. Considering the potential linux user population in China, maybe it is time that Bodhi Linux to add Chinese support. Just like Android , can input Chinese characters by Chinese Pinyin Input. |

But he hasn't delivered in improving our chinese translations and if we get or have a large number of chinese users the translations woud be very important to the user friendliness of Bodhi to them. Would you have any interest in this assuming your input issue is resolved? |

Hi Rbtylee,
I can translate English to Chinese, but I don't understand why need Chinese translation here. what we need I think is to input & display Chinese. But stay with English Interface. Just like install the Chinese packs on Android and Ubuntu. I recommend to stay with English interface, it will be hard to understand if you change all the interface & manuals to Chinese. When Chinese study the computer, they use English, if put back to Chinese, if will add an addition layer to understand, eps. the translation of tech. words is different between Mainland , Taiwan, and Hongkong. This is different from Japanese, they change everything to Japanese, their translation words are same and they always do this and get used to it. By the way, I guess the persons in China who use Linux OS have good education that know English well, otherwise, I guess they will use Windows. But I do believe Linux will become more and more poplar in China, not only because many people do not like windows, also I heard China Government is pushing Linux instead of Windows. |
Hi Rbtylee,
Another issue ,if you ask the people who left China long long time ago to do the translation, is the chinese overseas don't deal with Chinese tech. docs everyday. Everything is English. they maybe do not know the correct words should be used. Also the tech. words used maybe different between Mainland China, HongKong and Taiwan. One example is the word " Server" , the mainland translation is totally different from Hongkong. another example is " Donald Trump", the mainland translation is different from Taiwan. I have left China and Japan long long time ago,so don't know current situation, just for reference. |
Hi Cordx,
This article is good, but it is for Ubuntu, hopefully it can be ported into Bodhi soon. :) |
right. you had mentioned your desire for bodhi to add Chinese support and i was just trying to point out that even ubuntu doesn't have it set up out of the box :)
i tried installing all of the packages that ubuntu 18.04 installed to allow me to input Chinese characters, but they did not allow me to do so on bodhi 5.1.0. |
Hello back and good morning :)
Not that hard to make chinese work. Took me 5 minutes of research 1. sudo apt install ibus-pinyin 2. unload keyboard module. You will not use it 3. got to the settings to language tab and got o "Input Method Setting" 4. change fcitx to iBus 5. keyboard logo will appear on the shelf 6. right click on it to bring preference settings 7. add chinese language layout 8. enjoy :) Stefan http://www.enlightenment.org/ss/e-5e...1.67259056.jpg |
