Verizon's National Broadband UM175 EVDO Modem - Slow Speed/Halting
 

Since upgrading to BW64 current as of August 23,2009, I noticed shortly thereafter the networking speed dropped like a rock and began halting for about 30 seconds at a time before continuing to download. Although, Verizon doesn't officially sanction Linux, I had been using it with no problem as the speeds were comparable with Windows. Just about the time of the August 23 updates to BW64, Verizon also probably updated their wireless network which only can be done via Windows so I booted Windows and sure enough my EVDO modem was reprogrammed. A few days before the reprogramming, the networking speed had been terrible in Linux which is the reason for rebooting into Windows. Since the reprogramming, the networking speed and halting has been horrific in Linux, but none of these problems appear in Windows. No, I will not use Windows except to reprogram the modem. If I must, I will break this contract if this problem can't be resolved in my favor. I'm not really sure the source of the problem. Is it the updates to BW64 or Verizon? Remember, this EVDO modem used to run just as fast under Linux as Windows. If the problem is BW64, it should also be affecting Slackware users who are using Verizon's wireless service. I'm puzzled.

P.S. I'm still not exactly sure, but I think the problem is XOrg's experimental r600 driver (mesa). I'm using daily updates to it, and those updates are adversely affecting desktop performance and consequently applications based on X Windows. Using Lynx, I have absolutely no problem with halting or speed....
