Two years since the last Free Empires source release we finally are able to show the world some of the things we have been working on. Lamp Refugee is a project we started last May to help speed up the development of the Gambas Genie engine, the one that is going to be used for Free Empires. We released the first LR source release yesterday, and there are many new features to the engine compared to previous releases. These are notably map scrolling, building and unit construction, better resource gathering, and rudimentary artificial intelligence, just to name a few. We already have the basis for several new features in development, although these were not able to included in the release.
For more information please read the Piga Wiki article, and please comment on the Piga Software forum.

I finished my first Linux program yesterday, and what is surprising to me is that it turned out to be a utility. It is a tv-out front-end interface for the XRandR and Xvattr applications. I hope to add some features which I scraped because of time restraints into a 2.0.0 release (Thinking about a release date of Christmas or New Years, but don't quote me on that). Version 1.0.1 still works as a basis for tv-out though, and should help new users get the most out of their video cards.

Time for an update. I have been doing more experimentation with probability Gambas code. It is amazing how useful probability can be, with a little work you can make a functional artificial intelligence with just a random number generator. My code has been taking on some interesting forms, but I dont feel at liberty to tell what yet.

Free Empires has been getting some more attention recently from Me and Graham. We have been messing around with sprite drawing, having fun texturing. It is all hollow at the moment, we still need to implement, among other things, proper object code. You can see a new Screenshot over at Free Empires website, but it is alreasdy out of date. We may post a new one soon. Hopefully SR 3.0 wont be to far off in the horizon.

It has been awhile since I have posted anything here. I am happy to say that Gambas 2 is included in the Fedora 9 Repository, and I am pretty happy with the release (No more Separate Windows). I have been messing around with Probability code, and it is pretty interesting. I have built a Gambling game, and I am currently working on a Combat Game. There are two players, and the objective is to defeat the other player in battle. Every time you attack the other player the computer picks a random number (Currently from One to Ten) and decides whether you win or lose based on the result. If you win the battle the enemy's Health goes down and you gain Gold, which can be used to buy Healing to help your player. If your attack fails your health goes down and your enemy gains Gold. Player One can heal himself with less Gold than Player Two, but Player Two has a stronger attack (When Successful). This has not actually been implemented yet, but I am going to allow you to upgrade the players to different Classes. The higher the class you are in the more likely you are to win a battle. This code on it's self is pretty cool, but it's real future will be in larger Projects (Maybe even Free Empires). I will post a download link when I am finished.

1. Actual Unit Movement like in Age of Empires
2. Resource gathering, not just Resource trade

We are also planning to use SDL for more advanced features.

MSN (or Windows Live) offers a web based Messenger program. Here are its system specifications:

* A web browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later, Netscape 7.1 or later, or Mozilla 1.6 or later, running in Microsoft Windows.
* An Internet connection (56 Kbps or faster recommended)
* A Microsoft® .NET Passport. If you have a hotmail.com or msn.com account, you already have a Passport.
* Popups enabled for this web site if you are using popup blocker software like the MSN Toolbar

Well, one of those things are wrong. On my Fedora 7 Linux computer running Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.10, MSN Web Messenger works fine. Here is a picture:

However if you want MSN on Linux I suggest Pidgin or aMSN.

It has several new features that SR 1.0 did not have, such as a functional Age of kings like Market. Here are some of the New features:
1. You can now Win or Lose
2. The Market we mentioned before
3. Background Sounds
4. Sounds in General

And many other features I cant name at the moment.

SR 3.0 is going to be a big release, we hope to make all the graphics rendered with SDL.

I have had difficulty getting id Software games working on Linux (Though this is the Softwares, not Linux's fault). The first id game I got working was Quake III Arena, which worked perfectly except for the Fact OSS did not work. Then I tried getting Doom 3 and Quake 4, then I found out that I need the ATI fglrx Driver, but my Video Card is to old. RTCW did not work on Fedora Core 4, but on Fedora 7 it runs fine. The original Quake runs fine (I have eQuake and X11 Quake). Quake II has been the hardest to get working.

I first got an RPM Package for it, then I battled through dependency hell. When I finally installed it, the executable did not run. I tried another RPM Package, and it worked for a little bit, but then spat out this: Error: Couldn't load pics/colormap.pcx and stoped running.

Well then I found a Loki Installer for Quake II, quake2_3.21-r0.16.1-english.run and af i installed it, its Quake II gave me the following error: models/objects/debris2/tsvgalib: Signal 2: Segmentation fault received. With a little research I found by using this command "aoss quake2 +set vid_ref gl +set gl_driver libMesaGL.so" I can get it working (The aoss command is for getting ALSA to emulate OSS, and is not needed to run Quake II). I can only play it once however, then have to logout and login again to play it again. But at least it works now!

UPDATE October 14 2007: I found some launchers that the Loki Installer put in the Other menu. The Command they use works fine every time I put it in a Terminal (The Launcher does not Work though). The Command is: /usr/local/games/quake2/quake2.sh (Remember, if you get an error saying it cant find /dev/dsp, put the aoss command at the beginning!).

I have had lots of troubles getting good video players for Linux. The one Fedora comes with Totem, works great at playing Ogg Vorbis Video, but all other file types it cant play. Then I tried Helix Player, but I could not get it to play anything.

Then I got Yum to use the Livna RPM Repository, and got Mplayer. It has a little bit of an odd interface, but it plays Video fine. Then I also got Xine, and It plays Videos fine also. What is with the Players in the Fedora Repository not playing lots of Video types?

1. I have already removed Windows from my Computer in favour of Linux.
2. My farther cares about Computer security, and would not like the Fact Norton does not run well on Vista.
3. Many Games (and other programs) have trouble running on Vista.
4. It's GUI Is ugly, some say it is based on the Mac GUI (Also Ugly.)
5. It takes up WAY to much hardware. I would have to buy a new Computer.
6. Windows Vistas has DRM, and other things that spy on you.
7. Windows Vista is expensive, like most versions of Windows.
8. Restrictions on how many Computers you can install Vista (Or any other Windows) on are annoying.
9. Vista has problems with its File System.
10. It is a Closed-Source Product.

For more reasons see this Wikipedia Article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Windows_Vista

On my Fedora 7 computer, I have a Radeon 7000 Video Card from ATI. Since dropping Windows last spring, I have been trying to get my favourite games to work on Linux. Some of these Games Doom 3 and Quake 4. When I try to run the Linux port of Doom 3, every thing seems fine until:

WARNING: vertex array range in virtual memory (SLOW)
signal caught: Segmentation fault
si_code 1
Trying to exit gracefully..
Shutting down sound hardware
----------- Alsa Shutdown ------------
close pcm
dlclose
--------------------------------------
idRenderSystem::Shutdown()

With a little research, I found this was caused by a driver problem for my Video Card. The Doom 3 Linux FAQ (http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/) suggest getting ATI's Proprietary Driver (fglrx). But it turns out, the oldest card fglrx works with is the ATI Radeon 8500. This means it is impossible for me to run Doom 3. So when I have enough money, I will try to get a new video card.
