A community of interest?

Posted 04-26-2010 at 11:05 AM by williamfromtexas

There are two reasons why I love to hear this: "I will switch to linux when I can use [specialized piece of software]."

The first reason is: if there isn't already a free software clone of the latest version of what you want, then a virtual machine or emulation layer will do the trick. This is the technical argument, and works well on certain people.

The second reason and better reason is: it tells me that the person knows of 'the third option', they just...

The internet is exploding into the physical world. Hordes of creatives have more access now than ever before to ways of making their ideas real. Technology is more than a tool form, it's bridging into art.

Hyphenated techno-aethestics are creeping into our cultures and lifestyles: wall-plug computing, work-enhancing devices, passive-information feeds, social-media running shoes, internet-based bling. All of these embedded chips have to run something.

These things get updated?

Posted 03-30-2010 at 03:46 PM by williamfromtexas

Rockbox, what is that? Is it a Linux on your device? No, it's its own kernel. It loads a feature rich operating system onto your mp3 player, and is highly customizable with different...

It doesn't do my laundry.
It doesn't write emails to my mom (or my ex).

Here some things that I think it should be able to do, but I don't know yet:

Choose my songs - is there any app that will predict what music files you'll like? My mp3 player has a feature like this in its shuffle.

How about this option: a quick boot that opens a web browser and a normal looking desktop. As features are loaded in the back end, then they become available. Like...

A Spanish Holiday Video

Posted 03-11-2010 at 01:51 PM by williamfromtexas

I remember that I had seen the type of video I wanted to do: it was an entire, nearly 4000-picture collection video from someone who visited in Japan. Each shot lingered on the screen for an instant before switching to the next image, and by seeing every photo the viewer was taken along on the 5-minute journey. Myself just returning from a week's spring break in Spain, I had similar ideas.

The cool thing about the idea is that you can preview it before you even create the video, by...
