Debian & Fglrx

Posted 11-05-2010 at 07:42 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I've decided to change from Ubuntu to Debian Testing again, after a bad encounter with the Ubuntu updater. Long story short, I did not know it was going to take 4+ hours to update from 10.04 to 10.10, and when I was informed, I just killed the system power in disgust.

Anyway, as with every system I've had on this laptop ( an Acer Aspire 5536 ) I've discovered why I will never buy ATI/AMD graphics hardware again. You have two driver options - xserver-radeon and fglrx.

Things that annoy me in Ubuntu

Posted 10-22-2010 at 04:55 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I'm currently using Ubuntu on my desktop computer, and would like to share some of my issues with it and Gnome.

1) Updater creating popups and stealing my window focus
Updating is supposed to be a great feature of Linux distributions, but Ubuntu sucks at the GUI end of it. While updating I have to either leave my computer alone until the process is finished or face annoying popups in the middle of my screen every five seconds with a progress bar on them for every stage of...

Microsoft shitting on Openoffice.org

Posted 10-16-2010 at 09:22 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

If I asked you to name an Office Suit with these flaws:
  • Technical support that is not free
  • Breaking without anyone fixing it ( at least for a month)
  • Money spent on installing and maintaining suite
  • etc
You would probably say 'MS Office'. Microsoft says otherwise

England's 'Type 45' navy ships run Windows

Posted 10-06-2010 at 12:19 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

Dear lord

Quote:
The primary reason for purchasing a Type 45 is to obtain Sea Viper (aka the Principal Anti Air Missile System, PAAMS), which accounts for most of its cost. PAAMS includes the French Aster missiles and their Sylver launchers, and other Franco-British-Italian equipment including the Sampson firecontrol radar. There is also, of course, substantial American input - the command system

Creating a problem and then partially solving it makes people believe competitors have the problem

Posted 10-05-2010 at 07:40 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I asked the staff of one of my local primary schools why they were installing new computers and throwing out the old ( a few years ) ones. It confuses me when their previous units are perfectly fine for the educational needs of primary school students, but yet they decide they need new ones. I was given a few answers:
  • To 'stimulate' the economy
  • The old ones were getting slower
  • Microsoft offered them an educational discount

I live in Australia, and I have never seen a computer that...
