The Quirky Thinkpad 600 and audio

Posted 01-06-2011 at 11:50 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

Currently I am following in the footsteps of Motho ke otho ka botho ( ) and running Linux on older hardware. Every now and then something goes wrong on the computer, but the culprit is always easily identifiable as the hardware of my now thirteen year old Thinkpad 600.

Long ago, when I first tried Linux on the device I took the wrong route for...

Who needs a radio when I have a computer?

Posted 12-27-2010 at 08:31 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I've been trying to record sound on my laptop for the past few days without decent results.

When first recording with the internal mike there was a decent amount of white noise in the background. I put this down to the mounting of the internal mike inside a device with many moving and vibrating components ( eg my fan and harddrive ). $ choke -f carebear.cute

The year 'of the desktop' ( insert opensarcasmmark here ) is nearly over. Hope to see where unity and the gnome shell are taking us.

Criticisms of Open/Libre office and what I'd like a document processor to be like

I've tried to write up my criticisms of Open/Libre office before, but have never found the time. Today I have. and here they are:
  • The suites try to look, feel and operate as similiar to Microsoft Office as possible. This is a big failure. Try a new, streamlined approach that does not drag MS crap with it.
  • The suites have too many features that no one uses. Provide things as plugins instead.
eg Who has ever used a bibliographal database in their Writer document? Or performed a 'mail
