The moment you feel proud for your technics: my UPS

Posted 01-23-2010 at 10:36 PM by Web31337

Currently it's 09:30 AM here(while i write this).
At 3 AM tonight we had a power off. In a large area in center of a city. My router uptime was saved by my UPS =)
I was silently playing HL ( can't I? ) and listening to music, and then WHOOPS... i thought at least the link won't go down but seems like one of critical routers was in this area. Usually we have a power offs less than 1 time per month, with a length of a few seconds or minutes. And usually link stays up since our ISPs router at the roof is as well connected to UPS. This was an exception, link immidiately went down so I switched off my server, anyway, I wanted to clean it up.
At home I have two boxes(one is my server, which is 400W and router PC which is... oh, i don't remember, i guess 200-250W) and a switch connected to UPS, it's APC Back-UPS CS 500. I bought it back in 2006. So at this moment I thought in some hard case it won't last more than 5 minutes.
Well, we got this off, my router was still up. It has no monitor btw. 5 minues, 10, 15. Damn, that's a good UPS... still up! And at that moment i remembered i actually don't know the uptime of my router box. So, i got the keyboard, and without monitor entered my login, pw and checked it with backspace, it beeped. To be sure, cd / and ncdu(NCurses Disk Usage). I heard harddisk works, so i'm really logged in
Next, uptime > ~/uptime
Since I did that, I had nothing to do so i just looked out of my window on a disconnected part of city and prayed to save my router uptime
It started to beep faster... The end was close. So i just sit down in front of keyboard and listening to UPS, doing nothing.
After (OMFG) 30 minutes electricity turned back my router was up!!! OMG. That damn old UPS held it for half an hour! Man, I'm so proud of it...
What was it really, God, Linux or just my UPS or just luck I'm not sure

p.s.
router:~# uptime
09:35:49 up 130 days, 9:13, 1 user, load average: 0.84, 0.58, 0.40

I was thinking of a different things at that moment i stayed near my window. I was thinking how hard we are bound to a technological progress, how good we probably lived centuries ago with a peace with nature, etc. Since I'm writing a book on this very topic, that were my thoughts.
The future of a planet is in a hands of everyone and YOU too. What can you do to make this world better? Even for a single tiny moment, which anyway worths it.
