Installing Apache Tomcat 7.0 without httpd on Red Hat amd64

I had a couple of issues installing Apache Tomcat on a Red Hat server. I'm not using httpd because I only have Java web applications on this server and I wanted to simplify my configuration. I'm using Apache Portable Runtime in Tomcat to speed up serving up static pages.

Installing latest Java:
  • download latest jdk rpm
  • yum localinstall --nogpgcheck jdk.x86_64.rpm
  • to set this as the default java on the system (you can add other java utils with --slave if you need them):
