Random Rant #2

Posted 04-14-2006 at 05:03 PM by ukch

Am I the only person who finds it altogether too difficult to find the 'New Blog Entry' button? I would imagine that when I start writing to my blog a bit more I will remember where it is, but at the moment I keep looking for it up the top, and I just can't find it there (surprisingly enough)! It frustrates me to no end!

Well, anyway, I'm back from holiday now (and have been for a week, but I haven't been bored enough to wiki until now!). I was in North Wales, in a place called Pwllheli - 'twas very nice, and it only rained once. :) We now have Broadband (woohoo!), but I didn't realise that you still have to dial up for it (VPN or something?), and there's not much of a chance that I can get the crappy free modem working on Linux. I guess I will have to use my Windows machine as a gateway or something.

I had an interesting thing happen to me a few weeks ago - my old keyboard (~10 years old) which I was using on my LinuxFromScratch machine (also ~10 years old) suddenly broke down overnight. A couple of keys, namely the num lock, the up arrow and the # and ~ key stopped working without cause. I thought I had a corrupted keymap or something, but I tested the keyboard on another machine and it was definitely broken! I'm not the kind of guy who likes to throw things out, so I disassembled the keyboard (for the first time in my life), washed the rubber things, wiped the plastic circuit thingy, and put it all back together (not as easy as it should have been - the rubber things didn't want to stay where I put them!). Now the three keys I mentioned work, but three other keys don't. When I can be bothered I will reassemble the whole thing to analyse the problem, but as it stands at the moment I just use SSH from my other computer, which makes life a bit easier.

I have another problem.... On Tuesday I am going to cease being a teenager forever! :O Yes, it is my birthday, and I am turning 20! If somebody else who has just turned 20 can console me and tell me that it's not all that bad, I would greatly appreciate it! ;)

I ave so many things that I have suddenly realised that I want to put on my Linux blog, but I will leave them for another time. Coming up..... the problem of my old computer, my LinuxFromScratch adventure, my evil PCI bridge, my crazy proposed system of computer naming and an update on the keyboard situation.

Stay tuned for the next installment of.... The Random Ramblings of Ukch
