Looks like Ubuntu wins!

Posted 08-10-2009 at 03:56 PM by uinseann

Well; Mint did not stay on my old desktop for long I'm afraid. It just wouldn't run right on this computer. It's strange because you expect later versions to get better. I think the "Celena" version was the best I have tried on this computer. Maybe it's just this old desktop that is the problem? I could try it on my laptop but that has Ubuntu on and is set up just nice, so I'm not touching that!

The main problem with this version of Mint is the memory, or so it seems to me. When I was watching some short flv in Totem, it would run alright for 15 mins or so, then crash, but not just crash Totem ... it logged me out as well? I had to sign back in! Also, when playing a DVD in any player Kaffeine,Totem,Mplayer etc, the audio was out of sync? No matter how I tried to alter the settings, nothing cured this problem. When I started having trouble with the DVD drive not reading, that was enough for me!

So I popped my "ping" disk in and within 15 minutes Ubuntu 9.04 was up and running. No! I tell a lie, before I put "ping" in I burned a disk with "OpenSolaris" on it. I must be missing something here, cause I'm not impressed with it! Maybe it's OK if you're a geek, but to me, it's like a nobbled Ubuntu! I just want things to work. It gets some stick this old computer!!
