I'm not very good with video

It's true Im' afraid! I find video and audio formats confusing? Then you've got all these codecs to install to "Transcode". Why can't things be made simpler to understand? or is it just my brain starting to go soft, early.
I recorded part of a program last night using my Geniatech dvb stick through Kaffeine! The quality was very good, the sound seemed to be down but that could just be the signal strength I suppose. I closed Kaffeine and navigated to the file I had just made. it called itself an "m2t file". When I clicked the file it would only open in Kaffeine, but not Totem or Mplayer!
Like I said, not being "up" on all these formats I did some surfing and found a very interesting site, although it's not been updated since 2002 I read everything, and then down loaded the tarball offered (because I need to read and read for things to sink in). In the meantime I used "winff" to convert the m2t file to dvd pal format. It didn't take long because it was a small segment, but now plays in Totem and Mplayer.
