My passtimes ... b) tramping (No, not loose women. Hiking!)

Posted 01-20-2011 at 11:47 PM by Tinkster

Love the great outdoors, and would spend more time in the bush
or the mountain tops if time-restrictions weren't an issue.

Pretty much spend all of my vacations and the odd weekend
walking with a heavy backpack, and am planning on doing so
this weekend. Weather shouldn't be too atrocious, and it
will make for a good opportunity to test my new tent.

    Turns out the weather WAS atrocious, and the forecast was wrong;
    instead of "the odd shower" it started raining at ~ 10am on Saturday,
    and didn't stop till Monday lunch-time.

    I was thinking about staying at the hut after hours of walking in
    the pouring rain, but the hut (which sleeps 18) already had 23 people :}

    So pitching the tent in the rain it was. Tent is good, too, easy to
    set-up, and water proof. Not quite well enough ventilated for some-
    one waterlogged and steaming, so there was a fair bit of condensation
    going on, but not unbearable.

    On the way in I managed to keep my feet pretty much dry till
    almost at the hut, and on the way out 8 of the stream crossings
    were "oil change" for the boot material, with two of them being
    reasonably difficult to achieve.

    Oh, the tent, for those into tramping, is an

    Hi Tinkster,
    After your helpful comments I checked out your blog. Let's hear it for tramping! I get out every other weekend for slog up one mountain or another. I've just returned from a month of walking around the Monte Rosa, on the border between Italy & Switzerland. Got snowed into my bivvy sac at 2800m (~10 000ft) above Zermatt ... decided I needed a tent ... in fact just ordered myself a Hilleberg from Bentgate.com (incidentally they have a 15% off coupon until the 28th: code turkey11)
    Regards

    Sounds like an awesome trip - how do you manage to carry a months worth of food?
    Longest I've ever done was 8 days so far, I could imagine carrying enough for
    maybe 2 weeks, but a month ...

    Pray tell how your tent works out!
