Boy, time does fly, and I didn't blog anything in a long time!

I just felt that I had to mention that I completed my first overnight tramp
(no, not loose woman, the hike variety) with a heavy back-pack on in my treks.

No problems, even on rugged terrain, with mud, tree roots, boulders, pebbles,
shingle, you name it ... my feet were happy, as were my knees, ankles, lower
back. Awesome experience; I guess if it gets colder I'll try the flows for
going bush. Not sure I'll trust them w/ extreme weather conditions (under
-5 Celsius), or in deep snow ... :)

In the last post I said they were fine in foul weather ... boy, was I wrong :}

The recent cold-snap, with temperatures just above freezing point, and wind-chills pushing it well below I felt compelled to seek an alternative to my current standard-footwear. So far into the -admittedly mild - winter my trusted KSOs have given me enough warmth, but no more; this morning I felt fairly unhappy, and my toes were complaining quite bitterly about the cold and the abuse I gave them. So I looked through the range of available Vibram FiveFingers to see what alternatives I might find, and lo and behold, I stumbled upon the"flow" model, which has a neoprene upper and lining.

Went to the shop at lunch-time, found that the flows are a slightly tighter fit than the other models, and had to get 44s rather than 43s, but that worked out OK. On the way home my feet were the warmest part of my body - despite the excellent wind-proof shell, and three layers of merino clothing on the upper body, a nice long walk home, all up (and a fair bit upwards). Very happy with the latest find!

Wow ... time sure flies; it's been over seven months now
that I've been wearing VFFs almost exclusively! Had the odd
stint at actual barefoot running, to find that VFFs definitely
are more robust than the soles of my feet - had to peel shards
of glass out of my foot. Will refrain from running barefoot
in poor visibility conditions :}

I still swear by the vibrams, even in foul weather (cold & wet)
they're very acceptable. I use three models on a more or less
regular basis; my favourites will have to be the KSO's, followed
by the treks for more rugged terrain and the sprints, which have
a slightly different feel and fit.

Today I wore my fivefingers for a ~ 12.5Km bush-walk. I was
initially a bit worried about stubbing toes, spraining ankles
and what have you ... nothing the like happened, even though
the terrain wasn't always easy. I did manage to lightly bump
my toes 3 times in the persuit, but didn't really do them any
harm - strangely enough. Going downhill on sharp rocks proved
a bit slower than I hoped for, but it was all good fun, and
when I've gotten more used to it I can actually see myself
using the vffs for tramping!

The fivefingers are truly amazing. Reached a stage where
I can wear them for extended periods of time on a daily
basis, doing my walks around town and on bush-walks within
the city on a regular basis.

My feet hate being in "normal shoes", even my extra wide
asics feel unpleasantly tight.

I think my posture has improved, and my muscles (calves
and hamstrings) are now coping well w/ the "unusual exercise".

And let's not speak of my tramping (hiking) boots; great
discomfort for the first 30 minutes, and walking with wet
feet after the stream crossings proved disasterous for the
nails on my big toes. For the time being I can't wear anything
but my fivefingers or crocs.

Pretty much spend all of my vacations and the odd weekend
walking with a heavy backpack, and am planning on doing so
this weekend. Weather shouldn't be too atrocious, and it
will make for a good opportunity to test my new tent.

For a week now I've owned a pair of VIBRAM FiveFingers KSO (http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/Five-Fingers-KSO-Mens.htm).

For a week now I've owned a pair of VIBRAM FiveFingers KSO.

After a slow 3 days wearing them around house and garden for short
periods of time I took them for a walk to and from work (including
occasional running) two times this week - granting my feet (and the
shoes) the recommended one day break for novices.

What an amazing feeling - it's like walking barefoot w/o the risk
of cutting your feet on sharp rocks or broken glass.

Loving it so far, even though the different style of walking and
running one adapts uses muscles differently, and uses some muscles
one wouldn't normally use in the infamous heal-strike that strongly
padded sneakers taught us to use over years. So I find myself a
tad sore, hamstrings, calves, and yes, even DOMS in some muscels
in the feet.

After only one day of extended use of the VFFs my toes feel unhappy
being wedged into my expensive sneakers, not to mention the work-shoes!

I love good food, and - naturally, I think? - love cooking.
Have a few dishes I'd call my signature dishes, and only a
few years ago added baking to the repertoire.

There's a few cakes I quite enjoy making, and sharing with
people, usually taking them into work where they vanish
within 10 minutes to my great delight :}

One of my personal favourites is my Orange-Polenta-Rosemary
cake, the recipe for which I'll post here today; sorry to
people who only use volumetrics or imperial measurements,
you're on your own if you need to convert this from metric.

Code:

For the cake:
150g polenta
75 g flour
140g brown sugar
zest & juice of one medium orange
a splash of amaretto if the orange wasn't very juciy ;} (or
just because you like it - I do ;})
130ml olive oil
2 tbsp poppy seeds
1.5 tbsp baking powder
4 eggs
250g yogurt
a few pinches of ground rosemary
a pinch of salt

For the syrup:
a few sprigs of fresh rosemary
120g brown sugar
juice of two oranges (~ 100ml)

Instructions:
Preheat oven to ~ 150 C.

Grease a cake tin - I use a round 22cm diameter
silicon one (rolls up nicely for on the way home
in my backpack).

Combine flour, poppy seeds, polenta, ground rosemary
and baking soda.

Whip eggs and sugar into a foamy cream, add oil,
zest, juice and yogurt, blend well. Add the dry
ingredients slowly, constantly stirring till you
get a smooth batter.

Pour batter into tin, put it in oven and bake
for ~ 1:00h (your mileage may vary).

Take cake out of the oven, and leave to cool
for ~ 15 min, remove from tin and cool on a rack.

Prepare syrup from sugar and orange juice, bring them
to a boil, then turn down to a slow simmer. Add the
sprigs of rosemary.

Once the cake is cooled down, put a few sprigs of
rosemary on for decoration, then pour the syrup
over it.

Nutritional information: This should make 16
pieces, each of which has ~ 198KCal.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I (and everyone else
who ever tried it). :}
