Idea for a script to prevent xscreensaver while watching videos on a browser

The core concept is just:

while true ; do

wmctrl -l | grep -i "youtube\|vimeo" && xscreensaver-command -deactivate

sleep 5m

Perhaps it would be more elegant to have something that somehow works more accordingly to xscreensaver's time rather than this thing that has smaller cycles just to play it safe.

Won't work for embedded videos, though, as "youtube"...

Upgrading Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu Studio

Recently I have found myself doing more recording and other multimedia related stuff. Even though I have long ago implemented disaster recovery and do more backups than you can shake a stick at, I still did not feel like reinstalling.
Luckily you can easily install individual aspects of Ubuntu studio ie all the audio apps.

sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio
You can check out what is entailed on this page

You could also install the video in...

Thanks to LQ for giving a free blog to all subscribers! With this additional encouragement I can use this space to talk about my Linux-related ideas, experience and comments and hopefully get community feedback.

I worked as a linux admin on and off even though it's not my primary specialization. I have five computers at home, all of which has at least one linux partition. Out of those, my closet server may be of special interest because it lives in a closet and I attached it a dryer...

Video Editing in Linux, Part 1

Posted 03-03-2009 at 08:51 AM by arioste

I don't know what you know about video editing in linux, but I have just made the first steps, and I thought I would mention what I have discovered in case it comes up.

We have years of video recorded onto VHS-C tapes on two successive Panasonic camcorders. Once in a lucky moment at the flea market, I got a real steal on some quality video editing equipment from someone who did not know what he had, and I have edited all of it with titles, transitions, etc., onto DVDs for family distribution....
